During the 19th century, a period marked by significant Lebanese emigration to South America, a poor mother was devastated to learn her son’s ship had sunk. Clinging to hope, she prayed to the Virgin for his safety. Despite his never returning, her unwavering faith led her to build a church, creating a sanctuary that honored their bond and the journeys of many like them.
The church features reused blocks from the archaeological site and has a barrel vault. A barrel vault is a simple form of vault consisting of a continuous surface of semicircular or pointed sections resembling a barrel or tunnel which has been cut in half lengthwise.
